What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

What is MS? I have included the personal issues that my personal MS affects my life. No two people have the same experiences,
making it an extremely difficult disease to treat.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects millions worldwide. While MS is widely recognized for its physical symptoms—such as muscle weakness, spasticity, and mobility challenges—cognitive changes, often termed "cognitive fog" or "brain fog," are among its most disabling and least visible features. Cognitive fog in MS encompasses a spectrum of difficulties, including slowed information processing, memory lapses, attention deficits, and executive dysfunction. These symptoms can profoundly impact daily functioning, employment, social relationships, and overall quality of life.

WHAT IS MS?

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that impacts the brain and spinal cord which make up the central nervous system and controls everything we do. The exact cause of MS is unknown, but we do know that something triggers the immune system to attack the brain and spinal cord. The resulting damage to myelin, the protective layer insulating wire-like nerve fibers, disrupts signals to and from the brain. This interruption of communication signals causes unpredictable symptoms such as numbness, tingling, mood changes, memory problems, pain, fatigue, blindness and/or paralysis. Everyone’s experience with MS is different and these losses may be temporary or long lasting.
